The Mahathir Science Award is Malaysia’s most prestigious science award for tropical research. It was launched in honor of Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad, who promoted scientific research in advancing the progress of humankind.  

The Award is bestowed on any scientists, institutions or organizations worldwide in recognition of contributions and innovations towards solving problems in the tropics through science and technology, and is awarded to the most deserving based on merit. Only one award is awarded each year from any of the following four categories:

1. Tropical Medicine,
2. Tropical Agriculture,
3. Tropical Architecture and Engineering, and
4. Tropical Natural Resources.
