Governance
Council
The affairs of the Academy are governed by a Council comprising 13 members, each of whom holds office for four years. Twelve Council members are elected, and one is appointed by the Minister of Science and Technology from the membership of the Department’s National Advisory Council on Innovation (NACI). This Council is elected by the Members every two years. For the sake of continuity, six members continue to serve a further term, while six new members are elected once they have been nominated according to the constitutional mechanism.
To provide a better balance of race, gender or disciplinary area, the Council may co-opt additional members from persons who were nominated for election to the Council.
As the Accounting Authority of the Academy, the ASSAf Council is governed in terms of the stipulations of Chapter 6 of the Academy’s Parliamentary Act (Act 67 of 2001). As such, the Council is responsible for ensuring that the objectives of the Academy are actively pursued and achieved, within a given reporting period. In addition, the Council manages the overall operations and strategic direction of the Academy.
Council Committees
The Council has constituted Human Resources and Audit Committee, as well as an Executive Committee, comprising the office-bearers of the Council. Policies and guidelines for Academy projects and activities are carefully developed, published, and followed meticulously to ensure full transparency and accountability.
