The President of ASSAf, Prof Daya Reddy, nine members of SAYAS and Dorothy Ngila from ASSAf attended an Interdisciplinary German – South African Symposium on “Socio-Ecological Novelty – Frontiers in Sustainability Research” in Berlin.

The symposium and interaction between young academies formed part of the German-South African Year of Science 2012/2013 activities.

The Year of Science aims to strengthen science, technology and innovation (STI) cooperation and collaboration in cutting-edge research between the two countries. Germany is a close partner and funder in the implementation of several regional technology transfer and climate change initiatives. The two countries will use the Year of Science as a strategic tool to assist in bringing focused attention to South Africa’s science and technology initiatives and to illustrate German-South African cooperation in STI so that key audiences are able to appreciate the benefit for both countries.

SAYAS entered into a Memorandum of Understanding with their counterparts, while ASSAf and Leopoldina supported a similar agreement between these two academies.

According to Prof Jonathan Jansen, Rector and Vice-Chancellor of the University of the Free State, Kleinman, has become a leading figure in several fields: medical anthropology, cultural psychiatry, global health, social medicine and medical humanities. Not only has he shaped entire academic fields, he has also taught some of the world’s most influential professionals engaged in health care, medical scholarship, social policy and service around the world.

The title of Kleinman’s first public lecture was “Against Cynicism: How the Humanities and the Cultivation of our Moral Selves sustain the Idealism of Students and Faculty”. He also delivered the keynote address at a day-long colloquium entitled: “Constructions of Illness and Identity: Subjectivity and Chronic Disease in the South African Context”. The title of his presentation was: “A Case for Care-giving: The Social Context of Chronic Disease”. This day-long colloquium allowed the opportunity for mainly younger-generation academics, mostly from South African universities (UFS, Stellenbosch University and the University of Cape Town), to engage with Kleinman on their topics that were presented at the colloquium. Kleinman’s lectures were well-attended and he provided in-depth feedback to most of the participants and as anticipated, local scholars benefited greatly in engaging with him and in tapping into his expertise.

During his visit to South Africa, Kleinman was recognised as an ASSAf Distinguished Visiting Scholar. The purpose of the Academy’s Distinguished Visiting Scholar programme is to bring internationally prominent academics and researchers to South Africa to enrich the higher education community’s intellectual and research endeavors.
