The 14th Annual Meeting of African Science Academies (AMASA 14) was hosted by the Benin Academy of Sciences Arts and Letters (ANSALB) in Cotonou from 12 to 14 November 2018. The theme of this year’s meeting was Sustainable development in Africa: the role of young and senior academies. The AMASA 14 meeting was preceded by the solemn opening of the ANSALB and a learning collaborative workshop on Fundraising strategies for sustainability.

ASSAf was represented at the meeting and Prof Himla Soodyall, Executive Officer, led the delegation from the academy. ASSAf supported Benin in hosting the meeting through:
• one representative from the leadership of nine national young academies was funded to attend the meeting
• the scholarly publishing programme hosted a panel discussion on open science
• TWAS-SAREP sponsored a dinner during which Prof Robin Crewe shared information about TWAS.

Other events that happened on the side-line of the AMASA were:
• ASSAf and the Senegal Academy of Sciences (ANSTS) signed an MOU that would pave the way for collaboration in activities
• Ms Edith Shikumo, Young Scientist Liaison Officer, hosted a meeting with ten national young academies on voluntary action plans for the implementation of SDGs
• ASSAf and the Mauritius Academy of Science and Technology held a bilateral meeting to discuss possible collaborative activities for 2019
