The Network of African Science Academies (NASAC), the Global Network of Science Academies (IAP), and the Organisation for Women in Science for the Developing World (OWSD) Women for Science Workshop was held at the African Academy of Sciences (AAS)/NASAC headquarters in Nairobi, Kenya on 5 and 6 December 2011. The meeting was attended by representatives from South Africa, Kenya, Senegal, Zimbabwe, Zambia, United States, Nigeria, Ghana, Ethiopia and Mexico. Many of the attendees also attended the 2009 meeting, where a NASAC Women for Science Working Group was established.

During the meeting, progress reports were presented on academy progress in implementing the 2009 meeting recommendations. The InterAmerican Network of Academies of Science (IANAS) Women for Science programme was presented, and priority issues regarding women in and for science were identified for action. These included; mentoring of young girls, profiling women scientists, gender mainstreaming of academy activities, information dissemination, compilation of a database of women scientists in each NASAC member country, and a policy document on the state of women in science and technology in NASAC member countries. Recommendations on each of the key issues were made for consideration and implementation by NASAC and member academies.
